Welcome from Gulf Shores. Ethio you crack me up. Talking about sputtering on a fat harley. I used to ride a rice burner and although fun there's nothing like a harley.

Ok each shift fork has a nipple that fits into the disk on top and as that disk turns it pushes the gears in and out. Each nipple has a sleeve over it that fits into the disk. If I take those off it shifts fine. Does this make sence ?

Ok I'm learning here. It a rotorey top 4speed and the things I'm talking about are called finger rollers. It seems like they are binding up in the top part that rotates as I shift.

Okay, as you rotate the gears with the top off look for cracks and any damaged teeth, also is there any metal in the bottom, look for something that doesn't look right. There are a lot of pieces in that rotary top that can be bent or broken..shift paws comes to mind.

Re: Shovelhead, mechanic, shop
If you still cannot see or find the problem get up with mis fit there in Mobile,
It is at the point someone will need to pull it apart and replace what you find damaged by someone who knows these bikes.

Re: Shovelhead, mechanic, shop
I have another question. I'm putting the clutch back together and when I put the basket on and torque it. It is not sliding on past the woodruff key. If I'm not mistaking there should be enough of the woodruff key past the clutch basket so that the tab washer fits over it to lock the nut. Is this correct ?

Re: Shovelhead, mechanic, shop
Ddixon,
The shove lhead clutch.... the way it is set up is as follows.. the woodruff key will not go all the way thru the basket where you see it due to the hub locking tab has one tab bent inwards into the slot in order to lock the hub nut from backing out. It that tab breaks the hub nut WILL BACK OUT AND THE BASKET ASSEMBLY WILL TRY TO FALL OFF AND ETC.. I know this happened to me two months ago but running belt primary drive I just replaced the locking tab..lock tight again the hub nut and torqued and riding again.

That locking tab has a slot in it where it looks like the key should go. But the chain looks aligned so what you say makes good sence. Thanks for the help.

Re: Shovelhead, mechanic, shop
It's coming along I'll post some new pics soon. I can't wait to ride with y'all. But I have a dilema, I took the cam cover off to paint it and at the same time replaced the cork seals on push rod covers so now I need help setting the time again.

Re: Shovelhead, mechanic, shop
you have 2 timing marks on the cam which have to line up with one on the breather and one on the pinion gear. line them up and you will be good.

Re: Shovelhead, mechanic, shop
I was reading about a timing port on the primary side and setting static time. Am I way off?

Re: Shovelhead, mechanic, shop
If you have the side cover off with the cam and gears exposed you set the gear timing with the marks on the gears. if you have the bike running you set the ignition timing thru the primary side with a timing light picking up marks on the crank shaft weights. Set up the gears on the timing side with the gear alignment marks. then check the primary side for before and after timing. I never use the timing light since you can never be sure of rpm etc..etc I just adjust running timing by ear.
