Shovelhead, mechanic, shop
Hi I'm new here and new to Harley's I've been a sport bike rider and I just picked up a 79 shovelhead. I was looking for a good local mechanic to help me get this thing on the road. Any suggestions would help. I'm pretty handy myself but don't know anything about a shovelhead. Thank and I look forward to riding.

DixonBallz,
Will be back next tuesday, which oil leaks do you have currently..Also if not already done you need to replaace the single oil feed line to the top with dual feeding both heads instead of piggy from back to front. Will save damage down the road. Sounds like a bent shifting fork, if racket top tranny easy check.

Re: Shovelhead, mechanic, shop
I'm a taking the trans out now to inspect. I think the leak is from the main seal where the motor mates to primary. I will also check the oil lines. Thanks
It is a ratchet top

Re: Shovelhead, mechanic, shop
Both those seals are an easy fix, are you running chain or belt drive?
Also one thing many guys think is an oil leak is the chain pre oiler, and their are hoses routing to and from the oil pump to the primary housing.
On rachet top you can remove the top of the tranny once removed and inspect the shift forks which usually are the ptoblem.

I'm running a wet clutch. The oil lines have been removed from primary. Trans is now out I'll be inspecting in a minute. And it is chain. And the oil to the head is piggy backed.

Re: Shovelhead, mechanic, shop
A few tips,
you can cap off all the oil lines to the primary, seal it and with bike sitting up straight add 1/2 quart 30wt oil tru the side cover up to the bottom lip.
run a remote oil filter and cooler
replace the oil feed line with a tee type so each cylinder head is getting fresh oil instead of pumping into the rear then forward to the front.
Do not use metal gaskets, shovels have no close tolerance and will not seal, definetly not on cylinder base, or heads use James Gaskets.

Re: Shovelhead, mechanic, shop
Shift forks look good. With the top off there's a disk on top that rotates there is a spring loaded plunger that stopes it at every gear it functions good with top off but when I put it on it won't shift.

Rocket bikes are not allowed in the NHRA. That is apples and oranges, Bro.
