RIDER DOWN -- Sunday, 3-17-13
Michelle Crane of Milton, wife of Dan, missed a curve on 59 north of Stockton about noon today at about 55 mph and went off a 12-foot drop into woods. She is seriously injured and was lifeflighted to USA Medical Center in Mobile. As this is written she is undergoing tests, prognosis unknown.
The accident happened during a 15-bike ride to Monroeville. Michelle was third from last, her husband behind her.
Let's rally to Dan's support, and offer prayers for his wife.

Re: RIDER DOWN -- Sunday, 3-17-13
I wanted to update last night but was just too overwhelmed by the day to do so...
She suffered incredible damage on the right side of her body...shoulder, arm and all ribs broken. Her right lung was collapsed. There appeared to be a "kink" in her spinal column in her neck. She has no sensation from the neck down and is on a ventilator. Whether it's permanent or caused by trauma and swelling hadn't been determined as of late last night.
This was rider error that caused this accident... She was not green either, she was a 4 yr veteran of the wind.

Oh, and the family wishes their names not be made public at this time. Please pray for both of them.

Wow...2 people responded...2. Are you kidding me??? Someone was nearly killed... Maybe there wasn't an outpouring of comments but I hope in the silence some of you at least spared a prayer for this sweet woman and her husband...

Re: RIDER DOWN -- Sunday, 3-17-13
You are right , I read this monday morning but had my head somewhere else and did not put down in words what went thru my mind. prayers were sent....I cannot imagine what Dan was seeing happen and going thru. Bad enough when someone you don;t know goes down, or someone whom you only know on sight but not personally. But to see your wife....loved one go down that hard in front of you has to be heartbreaking. like most of us I put it aside but deep down inside like all of us we can only pray they both come thru this!
Truthfully this could be any one of us on a given day, our wife, girfreind or child. So we say a silent prayer for them praying for a full recovery.

Re: RIDER DOWN -- Sunday, 3-17-13
how are YOU doing Miss G?
I have led many a ride, and been on more than enough group rides.
in my experience
people will go down, 95% due to rider error. 1% mechanical error, 1 % road conditions, 3% other vehicles at fault.
I know this is not what you want to hear right this moment. but i assure you you need to hear it.
this was not in your control.
at some point you have, or are going to feel rider's remorse.
it is in most good natured people to feel this, and it is natural.
do not let it stray you from taking charge and leading/joining more group rides.
we can only control our selves.
I hope she pulls through this, and knee mail is still coming strong, but I also oray for you as well to get through this.

Riders remorse...glad it has a name. Yep, ate up with it.
My friends husband met with the trauma surgeon yesterday morning to review all test results. NOT good news... Dan is turning off her vent Monday and putting it into God's hands. We've all been told if we want to see her, to do so before Monday morn.
Thanks for your support and prayers. It is VERY much appreciated. This has shaken me VERY badly....that's how I'm doing...

Wife and I were 14th of the 14 bikes; Michelle was directly in front of us. Miss G was leading a perfect, absolutely safe ride. Jeanne, you have NOTHING to blame yourself for -- nothing!

So sorry to hear about your friend. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends.
On another note, please do not beat yourself up over this. THeOldGuy says you were leading a safe ride. I buried a friend today (not from a bike accident) and the things that go through our heads at times like these are pretty strange.

Re: RIDER DOWN -- Sunday, 3-17-13
Thanks for the support y'all. Riders remorse/survivors guilt..one in the same, I suppose. Yes, strange thoughts that play with the evil demons in the deep recesses of our minds. I know I didn't do anything wrong....I know this for sure.
Miracles can and do happen. I haven't stopped praying for Michelle but I am praying harder that Dan will have the strength to handle the tough decision that will come...whether she survives or not.
Thank you Bernard for the glowing vote of confidence in my leading...very much appreciated!

Re: RIDER DOWN -- Sunday, 3-17-13
Went and said goodbye to Michelle today. She is brain dead except for the most base of functions. This wasn't caused by blunt force trama to the head but by having 2 major blood vessels break when her spinal cord was stretched. Both lungs full of pneumonia and a bad infection that isn't responding to antibiotics. There is no healing happening. 9 am Monday, her vent is being removed and she's being placed in God's hands.
Please pray for the family...
