Brake Fluid Empty Brake Fluid

Post by jaded Sun Sep 02, 2012 8:56 pm

Went to ride today and had the spongy lever. So went and bought some dot4 and flushed everything. Seems like I'm lucky to make it 2 years before this happens to me. How long you guys getting out of yours?

I have never had to change fluid or bleed the brakes unless I changing pads or master cylinder.

What fluid are you using hayweed?
I'm wondering if dot4 is the culprit. I have a car that uses that also, and around 2 years the clutch starts getting spongy. Either that or I'm being sold cheap stuff at the auto parts store.

Strange thing. My Softail is a 2000 model. Front brake is and has always been rock solid. However, the front brake on my 2007 Roadking is and has always been very spongy. I even had the master cylinder changed in the spring and pretty much same thing. I just wonder if certain year HD's have issues that other year HD's do not.

Every bike I have ever owned had dot3. My Harley has dot5. Dot3&4 will mix but dot5 will not mix with any other brake fluid. My Harley has a spongy front but works great. So I don't worry about it. Just like Jim I have replaced the master but still the same.

hmm. If 3&4 can be mixed, I may look into switching to dot 3 in the future. Just because this hasn't happened to any of my vehicles using dot3. I've got my fathers old car in my garage that I drive every now and then which last had a fluid change 9 or 10 years ago and brakes are still rock solid.
