Heat is wicked !!
With fuel injection , and the EPA out to protect us from ourselves , new air cooled bikes are running soo lean , that its a wonder they dont burn holes in the pistons in the first few seconds of operation ..
My 08 Roadie TC96 ran hot and lean , so I installed Xieds to lie to the ECM and richen up the fuel mixture , lost a few mpg in town and still managed 50 mpg on a 2300 mile trip last August , but the heat was gone ..
In 2010 Harley started installing cats .. More heat , much more heat ..
In '11 , select models ( mine is one ) got the 103" SE cylinders and pistons .. Much much stronger motor and yep , more heat ..
Parade mode kicked in Monday with less than 10 minits of lite stop and go traffic , till today , it was 40 mile round trips to werk , and a little riding around otherwise ..
Today Bill and I headed out , and it was cool outside .. I rode 125 miles and even on the big road , the heat off the cat was awful ..
Wednesday when I got in from werk , 20 miles , two traffic lites 16 miles apart , I put my trusty Klein multimeter's thermometer on the primary derby 143 degrees , front cylinder , center of the rocker box , right side 143 degrees , rear cylinder , same spot , 223 degrees ..
Parade kicks in , I think around 287 degrees ..
Wicked just wicked ..

Re: Heat is wicked !!
understand... back before I did the TTS Mastertune I watched the oil temp and saw 260 regularly. Bike even shut down in stop and go one time. Road to the office today and checked the oil temp at each light. Highest I saw today was 205.

Full synthetic
Parade fan from ebay, supposed to be higher output than OEM:

Oil Cooler unit, OEM. I looked around, just wasn't comfortable with other units, there are several out there many use.
I found a heat sink that just snaps on the filter, claims it is supposed to lower the oil temp by 20 degrees for like 20 bucks on ebay, cant find one now. Cheap if nothing else.
I have a set of heat shields for the pipes, but when I ordered the pipes I sent for black, then later when I ordered the shields, (for that exact part number of the pipes ) they came chrome. How stupid is that? Now I need to find a powdercoater and get them blacked before I put them on.
Would also like to find someone who does the ceramic inside coating of pipes, I been hearing for a long time that that makes a massive difference in heat output.
Before all that it was getting so hot it was cutting out and stalling on heavy stop and go traffic. That parts fixed but its still trying to cook my right leg off from the pipe side every time I stop.

Re: Heat is wicked !!
I C where ewe posted it's an '07 model , wont be near as bad as the '10 and '11 model years ..
XIEDS should do you just fine , is all I did to my '08 , and they cooled it down a lot ..
They lie to the brain and give it more fuel , lose a few mpg , but the excess heat is gone , they are real simple to install ..
Just unplug the connector from the sensor in the exhaust and plug it into those two connections you took apart , a few tie straps and good to go ..

Keep in mind mine is far from stock. On her softail with its factory heat shields, etc, I never took notice other than when we went to the strawberry festival over here and we sat still in traffic for around 10-20 minutes at a time. It never cut out or stalled, but it was pretty warm then. But then I also made a u and went home, I wasn't going to push it on that one.
In my opinion it is never a bad thing to put an oil cooler and parade fan on any Harley. But that's just me.

I agree with the oil cooler completely
Can ewe tell a diff with the fan ??
Most folks say it just pushes hot air from left to right ..

Re: Heat is wicked !!
I don't have any statistics to back it up and yes it blows more hot air on the right leg, but I look at it as when you are moving its pushing air on the fins of course. And sitting still, the fan is also pushing air off the fins and helping them dissipate heat far better than by themselves.
Besides, police bikes have them installed first thing and who would know better than ones who do hundreds of parades and slow escort duties? But I have talked to folks and read all over the net that stock OEM fans are junk. They blow little air, the bearings wear out fast and they start to make lots of noise are the main complaints. Police get some kind of industrials from what I hear and even then I have also heard them talk about the noise and rattle.
They even make triple fans now, but they don't do much in the looks department:
Harley Triple Fan, click here:
Best one I ever saw was a guy I met at a bike show. He had a friend take some kind of fan from an appliance and put it in a stock cover. That baby pushed some serious air, like 3 feet from the bike. And wasn't loud on the road he assured me. I wish I could remember what kind of appliance fan he said it was, but there was alcohol involved.....
So yeah, I can tell the difference. And anyone wants to have a personal look at the one on mine (Same one as the ebay link I first posted ) gimme a holler and drop on by.
