Windchill Chart
I found this wind chill chart to be helpful in figuring how cold I would be getting. I use the wind speeds (Calm Column) as how fast I would be going. Any thing over 60 is just really cold. I also added a little bit of information that I found on line.
Wind Chill is the term used to describe the rate of heat loss on the human body resulting from the combined effect of low temperature and wind. As winds increase, heat is carried away from the body at a faster rate, driving down both the skin temperature and eventually the internal body temperature. While exposure to low wind chills can be life threatening to both humans and animals alike, the only effect that wind chill has on inanimate objects, such as vehicles, is that it shortens the time that it takes the object to cool to the actual air temperature (it cannot cool the object down below that temperature).
Beginning November 2001, the National Weather Service will be implementing a new Wind Chill Temperature Index. How does the old index compare with the new index? In general, if given the same actual air temperature and wind...the new index will be warmer than what you would have expected with the old index. We've created a Wind Chill Calculator below so you can compare the New Wind Chill Temperature Index with the Old Wind Chill Temperature Index. You can also take a look at the New Wind Chill Chart with the Old Wind Chill Chart.

Re: Windchill Chart
Been there...done that! Didn't know u were from the windy city??!!
I grew up there...near north side...Chicago ave/Western ave area.....did the Chicago Toys for Tots run in 96....froze my a** off. You change your riding perspective a bit......winter time....Jan or Feb...temp gets up to almost 32F without a lot of snow and ice out...you fire it up and go for a ride....granted...usually a very short and cold ride.

All my family hails from around Peoria IL. Fulton County, a little west of there anyway, about 45 min west. I lived in Rogers Park in Chicago a little over a year. One block from the lake, which was awesome in summer, one mother bear in winter.
Re: Windchill Chart
Spent quite a bit of time there myself ( Navy ) over the years .. Right on the lake ... Cold wind coming off that lake

I'm a confirmed weenie..... Below 50 and I don't usually ride for very long. Maybe it's lack of insulation...

Must have been Great Lakes Naval Base eh Bagger? Did some time there as well. really hated that dump. I retired from the Orlando Navy base...that was truly the best Navy base around...not a ship in site!

Re: Windchill Chart
I had a misguided youth...left high school...at 17...then joined the Army in 1972......hung out there for 7 years...got out and tried to be a bum for a year and a half....didn't work out too well...then joined the Navy in 1980 and did 13 more years to make 20 and then retired. I was in Glakes from 10/1980 until May I think of 1981...then down to Orlando......came back to Orlando in 1990 and taught at the Nuke school for 3 years and then retired.
Re: Windchill Chart
I was raised in Youngstown Ohio. Dug my Dog out of the drifts about every year. Left in 79 for the service. Been mostly in tropical climates and ended up here. I can not even go up there in the winter. One day I'll have to grow some fuzz on it and go. I ride all year down here. But that's like weenie weather from up there.

Re: Windchill Chart
See if you can go on ebay and buy a set of "hippo hands". They made them years ago. They fit over the handlebars and then your hands go inside. Keeps the windchill off of the hands which get cold first. Get a good scarf..works wonders keeping you warm as well.
Re: Windchill Chart
they still make them , I had a set in the 70's , much better now
I got there the last time in late 81 coming off shore duty at NASPensacola , no I aint no freakin' airedale ..
So ewe was a nuke MM ?? I remember the Nuke school in Orlando , nicest building there .. You musta retired just about the time they closed Orlando ..

I retired just before they closed the base...no...I was not a nuke MM....much worse....I was a nuke ET!!
Funny story....I entered the navy as an E-3 over 7...got to Glakes....OSVET (Other Service Veterans) training....not boot camp but they teach what is a chief and what is an officer..who to salute..etc...and give u uniforms and stuff....this chief tells us...no matter where u go in the Navy...everyone hates OSVETS...ok....then I go to Glakes...and find out everyone hates Nukes...and of all the nukes....the ET's are hated the most...so I end up an OSVET Nuke ET....then go to prototype training...and find out that those picked up for staff instructor...prototype commandos...are really hated...so they pick me up as a prototype commando.....then I finally get to my first boat....every one hates non quals.....then I made E-6 a week before I step foot on my first Navy ship.....as a non qual......so here I am ..an OSVET...NUke...F*n ET...Non-Qual,,,I figure I have not got a chance!!! Everyone hates me!......but on a submarine....u learn fast....do not dish anything out that you cannot take......so very quickly....I let it be known.....that I can take it................................and dish it back out too!
Then I find out...just how claustrophobic I am......but I find out....that....one U lose yer mind.....not so bad after that!

add to that the WIND CHILL of moving and you get a chilling effect. at one point I could not open my visor becuase it froze shut....lol
I had on my leather riding pants, covered with Carhartt insulated bibs
no heated riding gear either

Re: Windchill Chart
I was a Navet , I got out for about a year , same time you got out , being a bum sucked , so went back in at Orlando as a Navet , got to keep E5 , but lost my seniority ..
The reason nukes were hated is after all that school , they hit the fleet as second class with no experience

Re: Windchill Chart
I made E-6 a week before ever stepping foot on a real ship...they really hated me! I wasn't very successful in the Army. I made E-5 fairly quick but then really got in to that good German beer and wine.....then found out that the MP's and everyone else in authority did not have the same warped sense of humor I did. So I was a week from making E-6 but instead I made E-4. Joined the navy as an E-3 over 7. Recruiter told me I got no credit for my prior rank and time in service but the good side was that they would not hold it against me either!
