1992 sporty basket case bike
Damn, I bit the bullet and bought a 1992 883 hugger basket case to put together for my wife and daughter to learn to ride.
I need my freaking head examined but know what the doc would say! (Stupid ) the motor was taken apart by previous owner who had the plan to build a stroker with the help of a friend. The two of them took it all the way down with the exception they did not split the crank and rods.
I mean basket case totally! idiots; then decided they could not do the project. even took out the gear assembly, guess they wanted to see inside?
Well my goal is to put it back together stock, clean all up put in new rings and complete gasket/seal kit. Will start next month after some maintenance is done on the 72 Shovel hopefully before thunder Beach.

Good luck. I know how those basket cases can be. May or may not have all parts. Sounds like a fun project though.

Re: 1992 sporty basket case bike
Thanks hayweed, Yep part fun' part teeth grinding frustration' but all enjoyable working on the bike. And yes you are right there are parts here and there missing, middle section of the rocker covers, handlebar switches, and controls. Best part of the deal was an S&S super E carb came with it like I have on the shovel. Hope to get started on it next month after finishing new wire harness and a few other things on the shovel before TB.
Take care and happy Easter!

Good Luck with the Basket Case.
I believe that a project like that could be a lot of fun. Unfortunately, my job has me working way too much overtime these last few years. Maybe one day the oil patch will slow down just a tad and I can get a break!

Yep, that oil patch will keep you busy, spent some time out there myself after the navy then found a job back in aviation and never turned back. My biggest problem will be having a heavy maintenance check starting in MIA in the next week or so will take a lot of my time next month. But right now rewiring the shovel and getting it back running is primary project. Beside I need to lay all the sporty engine parts out to see what else I am missing. Like hayweed said it is the little parts that slow you up when you are not expecting it.

Re: 1992 sporty basket case bike
Well I am working aviation in the oil patch. It is a great job and the job is financially better than I once dreamed it would be. I have always wondered about working on the big iron like I imagine your doing, but after 29 years in the gulf, I better stay where I am for now.

We have a similar background, 4 years in the Navy with S-61 and B212 models then an Air force tour in the HH-3 and B212 again. Got out spend another 5+ years as flight mechanic/crew chief for DOD contractor until second crash decided time to try fixed wing aircraft. Been in the corporate/commercial side since 1987.

Re: 1992 sporty basket case bike
Interesting!
I have worked with most every Helicopter type in the Bell Fleet as well as a few of the Sikorsky aircraft including most variants on the S-76 and also the S-92.
I cut my teeth on the B212 back in 1985 when I first began my aviation career.
Do you have your IA?

Nope, never been interested in getting an IA have always been in management since 1990; production super, DOM, Technical Director, asset manager etc.
I use to get to fly the B212 on some down range trips, love that machine even today just hearing one brings a smile and memories.

Re: 1992 sporty basket case bike
I have been considering an IA but mainly to make myself a little more marketable in the event I need to look for something else. My management experience has been limited to some working positions like Lead Mechanic and such as that. It really isn't my cup of tea dealing with all the various personalities that come and go. The more I have to work lead work, the more I feel like I would rather be that lone mechanic you see out there on the flight line getting the job done.
Anyway, I was not trying to steal your thread, I do wish you a fun and rewarding time putting the Sporty back into running condition. If there is ever anything I can do to help you out with that, let me know. OHHH and take some pics!!!

Re: 1992 sporty basket case bike
I sent this email to the address above but I was told it was wrong?
I have the complete handle bars with all the controls on them. I still need them to make sure I wire up the new ones correctly. I also have the battery tray, battery, rear fender, complete front and rear suspensions, mag wheels, brakes except the front disc, seat, front fender and gas tank but I might be reusing the gas tank on the bobber. May have some more stuff laying around when done also. I will not be back in town for two weeks then I am off to ride in the mountains for a week. Just let me know if you are still interested then.
Jason
If you want contact me at jpg0511@yahoo.com like I said I am about 3 weeks before I get back home and in no hurry to sell any of it now.

Re: 1992 sporty basket case bike
Hi Jason, sorry about that bad address 'working from home and prepping for next project I crossed up the address; correct one stoneyvc@gmail.com.
That is fine I have enough going on between the 72 electra glide TB prep and work kicking off again later this week. In no rush for the frame parts have the engine all in pieces.

Between buying my daughter a USED car and moving her for school and my work schedule I have not had time to get back on the sporty project. TOO dang hot anyway.
