Fluids? Empty Fluids?

Post by T-Ray Sat Aug 04, 2012 12:35 pm

Wondering what some of you are using for primary and trans fluid? Right now i'm running Mobil one 20 50 for oil. Guy said he changed trans and primary fluids not long before I bought the bike a year ago. I changed the oil as soon as I got it because he said it needed it. Now i'm thinking i want to do the primary and trans just not sure what to use. Bike is an 88 Heritage.

Thanks for all the input in advance,
Terry

Believe it or not. Harley only charges $100 to change all three oils. And you don't have to worry about what kind of oil you need.

When Harley changes oil they use screaming eagle engine oil in the primary and gear oil in the trans. You can use Mobil 1 in the primary but it has to be motorcycle oil.

I use Royal Purple 75-140 full synthetic gear oil , ( change every other motor oil change ) B&M trick shift ATF fluid in the primary ,( change with motor oil ) and Valvoline VR1 20-50 Full Synthetic in the motor ..

At O'Reilly's trick shift is $7 a qt , Valvoline is $5.50 a qt , and R-P is $21.00

You can also use the Mobil 1 M1-102 oil filter ( $13.00 ) or the HD filter ( $9.00 )

I get oil analysis done every oil change , the last change had 5500 miles on it , and still had plenty of life left in it .. They recommended 7500 on this oil , right now it has 5500 , and I may run to 6000-6500 and change and see how it looks before sneaking up on 7500 ..

Oil change costs me $ 50 for all three oils plus filter

Considering changing to Redline 20-60 in the motor , but not easy to find if I need it on the road

Amsoil in all 3. Not really seeing a difference though, probably will change up to something else next time around.

Running castrol 20-50 in engine and 75-140 in the others. Oil change with wix filter from oreillys is $45 and I know none of my stuff is stripped out and no reused gaskets when the job is done.

I was running Mobil 1 synthetic in everything till I helped my Dad trade his 1997 Chevy this year. He traded it in with 454,000 miles give or take a few hundred miles. He change the oil pretty regular, every 5000 to 7500 at Bebo's with 10w-30 what ever is in the bulk cheap stuff. Never had an engine problem, and it didn't burn any oil when he traded it in.

Transmissions were the only thing that ever wore out. So, based on his success with cheap bulk dino oil I am going back and saving my money. Castrol 20w-50 classic stuff.
